Doctors Without Borders (MSF) rescued a total of 85 migrants from two capsized or struggling boats off Libya on Sunday night and Monday morning. The rescues were at the request of the Italian National Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre under the new NGO code of conduct.

New rescue decree increases risk of deaths say NGOs

On Wednesday (December 28), Italy’s government approved a cabinet decree which imposes tougher rules on charity ships that rescue migrants at sea. The new rescue decree will make it harder for such ships to rescue as many migrants as possible – with severe penalties in cases of non-compliance.

There were positive tones from French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna following the recent tension over migrants, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said. The two met at an EU foreign affairs council in Brussels on Monday to discuss the migrant issue.
