Roma Ciampino airport received 4* rating from Skytrak

Skytrax awards Ciampino 4-Star rating

News Travel & Tourism

Rome’s Ciampino airport has been certified for the first time as a 4-Star regional airport by Skytrax, the leading international airport rating and assessment organisation.

The recognition follows a detailed audit of services and operational standards at the airport, officially known as Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino G.B. Pastine. Skytrax said the certification reflects a solid and consistent passenger experience across the airport.

According to the London-based organisation, Ciampino achieved a good standard in key passenger-facing areas. These included terminal comfort, cleanliness, wayfinding, staff service, and security and immigration processing. Skytrax also highlighted the overall consistency of the end-to-end passenger journey.

The airport was assessed in the category for facilities handling between two and five million passengers annually. The audit praised the availability of self-service check-in and bag drop facilities, as well as efficient security screening. Skytrax said boarding arrangements were straightforward and supported a smooth customer flow.

Additional positive findings included a good supply of seating with power and charging points. Skytrax also cited well-designed workspace areas, along with a structured mix of retail outlets and food and beverage options. Affordable transport links into central Rome were also noted as a strength.

Ciampino is Rome’s secondary airport and primarily serves low-cost and short-haul flights. It operates alongside the capital’s main hub, Leonardo da Vinci Airport at Fiumicino, within Rome’s integrated airport system.

Great news for Rome’s airports

Marco Troncone, chief executive of Aeroporti di Roma (AdR), which manages both Ciampino and Fiumicino airports, said the certification marked an important step forward. He described it as a milestone in the continuous improvement programme being pursued across Rome’s airports.

Troncone said Ciampino plays a strategic role for both Rome and Italy. He added that the Skytrax rating strengthens the airport’s position within a dual-use operating environment, serving both commercial and institutional traffic.

The recognition adds to a strong period for Rome’s airport system. In 2024, Fiumicino entered the Skytrax World’s Top 10 Airports ranking for the first time. It also retained its 5-Star Skytrax rating for a third consecutive year, placing it among just 12 airports worldwide to hold the highest classification.

AdR said the Ciampino award confirms its focus on service quality across airports of different size and function.
