Italy’s flag carrier ITA Airways has confirmed the launch of a new “Large Pet Friendly” service. It will allow dogs weighing up to 30kg to travel in the aircraft cabin on domestic flights from summer 2026.

The initiative follows regulatory approval from the ENAC and marks a significant shift in Italian aviation policy, expanding access for passengers travelling with medium-to-large pets.

Inaugural test flight

The move comes after a demonstration flight last September between Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino airports, which tested the operational feasibility of transporting larger dogs in the cabin rather than in the hold.

On board were two dogs, Honey, a mixed breed, and Moka, a Labrador, the first large dogs in Italy to fly in the passenger cabin. Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini travelled on the flight, describing the initiative as a “game changer for millions of passengers”.

New cabin rules for larger dogs

Under the new service, eligible dogs weighing up to 30kg will no longer travel in the cargo hold but will instead occupy a dedicated space in the passenger cabin.

While full commercial details and pricing are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, early indications suggest that owners will be required to purchase a seat or designated area for their pet. Reports also point to a cap of around six large animals per flight, subject to operational constraints and safety regulations.

The change builds on a previous adjustment made in 2024, when the in-cabin weight limit was raised from 8kg to 10kg. The new threshold represents a substantial expansion and places ITA Airways among a small number of international carriers offering similar options.

‘Pets are part of the family’

Joerg Eberhart, chief executive and general manager of ITA Airways, said the decision was due to passenger demand.

“We have worked to ensure continuity of that experience by transforming it into a ‘Large Pet Friendly’ service available on our domestic flights,” he said in a statement. “This decision stems from listening to our passengers and the understanding that pets are part of the family: we want every journey to begin and end together, without separation.”

Eberhart added that the airline remains committed to inclusivity “in full compliance with regulations and the highest safety and quality standards”.

The introduction of the service reflects broader changes in travel habits, as increasing numbers of passengers seek to travel with companion animals. With regulatory backing from ENAC, ITA’s policy could prompt similar moves by other European carriers if demand proves strong.
