Search for two missing after Lake Bolsena storm

News

Emergency services are continuing their search today for two young men feared missing in Lake Bolsena after their boat capsized during a violent storm on Friday.

The alarm was raised at around 5:00 PM yesterday when a witness reported seeing a small vessel overturn near the beaches of Faro and Cornos, in Montefiascone.

Carabinieri officers, firefighters, Guardia di Finanza, and medical personnel responded quickly. Patrol boats, two fire service vessels, and a helicopter have been deployed to scour the waters. Divers joined the search late on Friday evening and remain on site today.

According to initial reports, the missing men were on board the boat when it overturned in rough conditions caused by heavy rain and strong winds. Authorities have not released their identities.

The storm struck Montefiascone and nearby areas on Friday afternoon, forcing several boats to struggle back to shore. While most managed to return safely, at least one did not.

By nightfall on Friday, no trace of the missing men had been found. Officials said poor visibility and turbulent waters made operations difficult. The Carabinieri added that checks are being made to confirm the witness account and clarify the circumstances of the incident.

Lake Bolsena, Italy’s largest volcanic lake, is a popular summer destination. The sudden storm left beaches deserted on Friday evening as emergency services warned of dangerous conditions.

Search operations resumed at first light today and will continue.
