By Region News North-east Italy Travel & Tourism

RFI technicians discovered a heavy padlock on the electric cable of the second track at Montagnana station in Padua. Police stated the padlock could have damaged the train’s pantograph, potentially causing significant disruptions.

The Northern League quickly reacted to the incident. Alberto Stefani, a deputy and Liga Veneta secretary, described the situation as serious and called for immediate clarification. Mara Bizzotto, deputy vice president of the Lega Group, echoed Stefani’s concerns, stressing the need for a swift investigation.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 16 January, around 7 a.m. An RFI maintenance worker spotted a rubber-coated bicycle lock on the overhead line at Montagnana station. Fortunately, technicians removed the lock before any damage occurred, preventing delays for passing trains.

According to the police headquarters’ statement, if not removed, the padlock could have damaged the train’s pantograph and the overhead power line, posing a danger to train circulation. The complaint, filed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), was submitted to the Polfer offices in Verona.

The Digos of Padua is investigating the incident, and the Rovigo prosecutor’s office is handling the case, considering it an attempted transport safety crime.

Yet another issue for rail network

This incident has added to ongoing issues for Italy’s rail network, which has been plagued by delays, cancellations, and controversy surrounding Transport Minister Matteo Salvini. The FS group has previously raised concerns about potential sabotage on the lines.

ANSA reported the FS rail company believes the chain could have caused major damage to the pantograph and power line, leading to significant disruptions. The prompt action by RFI technicians averted potential chaos, and the incident has been reported to the relevant authorities.

Transport Minister Salvini faces increasing pressure to resign, with recent faults on the lines adding to commuter frustrations.
