Bad weather alert for Sicily, Sardinia and Calabria

By Region News Southern Italy The Islands

A wave of bad weather, featuring heavy rain and strong winds, is expected to last until the weekend, particularly affecting the south. Despite this, temperatures are rising.

Today, a red alert is in effect for Sicily and Calabria, while Sardinia is under an orange alert. Schools in Catanzaro, Lamezia, and Reggio Calabria are closed for the day.

A mass of cold air at high altitude is causing a progressive worsening of the weather, particularly in Sardinia, Sicily, and Calabria. This will result in rain, thunderstorms, and increasing winds, which will also affect Basilicata and Campania. According to available forecasts, the Department of Civil Protection, in coordination with the regions responsible for activating local civil protection systems, has issued a new adverse weather warning.

The warning predicts scattered to widespread precipitation, including showers and thunderstorms, starting from the early morning in Sicily and Calabria, and spreading to Sardinia. These events will be accompanied by heavy downpours, lightning, and strong wind gusts. Strong to gale-force winds, potentially reaching strong gale-force, are expected from the eastern quadrants in the same regions, extending to Basilicata and Campania. Storm surges are anticipated along the exposed coasts.

Given the ongoing and forecasted weather phenomena, a red alert has been issued for large areas of Calabria and Sicily today. An orange alert is in place for eastern Sardinia, parts of Sicily, and central-eastern Calabria. Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for other areas within these regions.
