Emergency services launched helicopter searches on Monday after a woman was reported missing at Spigno Monferrato, near Alessandria, following torrential rain that battered parts of northern Italy. Rescuers scoured the area from the air as ground access was hampered by flooding and debris.
A landslide in the same Piedmont area left about 15 people cut off at a campsite, sources said. Local teams are working to restore access and ensure those stranded have food, water and medical checks.
Lombardy suffered widespread disruption. The Seveso River burst its banks in Milan’s Niguarda district, flooding streets and underpasses and forcing the evacuation of at least one school as a precaution. Emergency crews helped residents and cleared waterlogged roads.
Heavy rain also triggered landslides in the province of Como and left roads in parts of the region impassable. Authorities reported significant damage to local infrastructure and warned motorists to avoid affected routes.
Firefighters made dozens of call-outs across the affected region. The provinces of Monza and Varese were among those seriously hit, with crews attending multiple rescues and clearing operations into the evening.
Local civil-protection units urged residents to stay alert and to follow official advice. Weather services warned that more unstable conditions could follow, and teams remain on standby across Piedmont and Lombardy.
