Amedeo Modigliani, born in Livorno on 12th July 1884, remains one of Italy’s most distinctive and celebrated modern artists. Known for his elongated portraits and melancholy nudes, Modigliani’s work bridged classic Italian sensibility and the avant-garde energy of early 20th-century Paris.
Though he died young—at just 35 years old in 1920—Modigliani left behind a legacy that continues to captivate collectors, curators and art lovers around the world.
Modigliani grew up in a once-prosperous Jewish family, though his early years were marked by illness and financial hardship. His mother supported his artistic ambitions, and after initial training in Florence and Venice, he moved to Paris in 1906.
Inspired by African masks
It was in the French capital that Modigliani developed his unique style. Surrounded by leading figures of modern art, including Picasso, Brancusi and Utrillo, he refined his visual language: stylised faces, long necks, almond-shaped eyes and a soft but haunting palette.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, Modigliani avoided abstraction. Instead, he focused on the human figure, drawing inspiration from African masks, Renaissance portraiture and classical sculpture. His nudes, though controversial at the time, are now regarded as some of the most intimate and expressive works in modern art.
Despite his talent, Modigliani lived in poverty for much of his life, plagued by ill health, alcohol and drug abuse. He died of tubercular meningitis in Paris in 1920. A day later, his young partner Jeanne Hébuterne, pregnant with their second child, died by suicide.

Posthumous Recognition
Modigliani’s fame grew rapidly after his death. Once dismissed as an eccentric outsider, he is now seen as a central figure in early modernism. His paintings have fetched record prices at auction, and major exhibitions around the world continue to explore his influence.
Italy has since reclaimed Modigliani as a native genius. The Museo della Città in Livorno houses a collection of works and documents related to his life. His story remains a powerful example of artistic dedication in the face of personal turmoil.
