The Malaga Italian Film Festival returns for its eighth edition from 15 to 24 May 2025, offering a line-up of contemporary Italian cinema.

Organised by the Dante Alighieri Society under the patronage of the Italian Embassy in Spain, the festival will feature films that have gained critical acclaim in Italy and beyond.

One of the standout events of this edition is a tribute to Andrea Camilleri, marking the centenary of the birth of the celebrated Italian author and creator of Inspector Montalbano. Camilleri, one of Italy’s most influential literary figures of the 20th century, will be honoured through a series of events highlighting his enduring impact on Italian literature and television.

Researchers from Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil will gather to discuss Camilleri’s literary contributions, which include not only his well-known Inspector Montalbano series but also his work as a theatre director and television writer. As part of the homage, three films based on Camilleri’s works will be screened on 15 and 16 May. They are, ‘La mossa del cavallo’ by Gianluca Maria Tavarelli, ‘La scomparsa di Pató’ by Rocco Mortelliti, and ‘La concessione del telefono’ by Roan Johnson. These screenings, open to the public for free, will also include a rare interview with Camilleri conducted by RAI in 2019, a few months before his death.

The festival also highlights the diversity of contemporary Italian cinema through eight films, featuring both established directors such as Ferzan Özpetek and Rocco Mortelliti, and emerging talents including Neri Marcorè and Margherita Vicario. This year’s programme reflects the ongoing evolution of Italian cinema, combining seasoned filmmakers with fresh voices.

In addition, a short film competition will provide a platform for new directors.
