Libyan coastguard allegedly fired on rescue ship

The European Commission on Tuesday said it had contacted Libyan authorities following claims that the Libyan coastguard opened fire on a migrant rescue vessel in the Mediterranean.

Italy is not legally responsible for the actions of Libya’s coastguard during a deadly 2017 migrant rescue, Europe’s top human rights court ruled on Thursday. Judges at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) found Italy did not have “effective control” over the Libyan rescue operation in which 20 people died.

Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has defended the government’s decision to expel Ossama Anjiem, a Libyan wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), citing urgent security concerns. The move has sparked criticism from human rights groups and lawmakers, who argue Italy ignored its obligations to the ICC.

From 12 January 2025, Italy and Libya will resume direct commercial flights after more than a decade. Italian carrier ITA Airways and Libyan airline Medsky will operate the routes.
