On Saturday afternoon, passers-by spotted the body of a baby girl lying in vegetation near the Fontana del Giglio, Villa Pamphili. The girl, believed to be around six months old, showed no signs of life. Emergency responders arrived within minutes.
Despite attempts to revive her, the child was pronounced dead at the scene. Trauma marks were reportedly found on her body.
As officers secured the area in Villa Pamphili park, they discovered another body roughly 100 metres away, hidden inside a black sack. The arm of the deceased woman was protruding from the bag. Her remains were in an advanced state of decomposition.
Police believe the deaths are connected. DNA testing will determine whether the woman and child were related, possibly mother and daughter.
The prosecutor’s office has opened a file for aggravated double homicide. Antonio Verdi is leading the investigation.
Autopsy on Tuesday
Autopsies and DNA sampling will take place on Tuesday. These will help establish both the causes and the timing of death.
So far, no obvious injuries from weapons have been found on either body. The nature of the trauma remains unclear.
The Scientific Police cordoned off the area and began forensic investigations.
“I knew something was wrong when the ambulance arrived,” said Andrea, a regular jogger. “It’s tragic and unsettling.”
Another visitor, Alessandro, described the scene: “My wife took our kids straight home. It’s horrific that this happened here.”
Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding areas, including Monteverde and Aurelio. Checks are also being carried out on recent missing persons cases. Officers continue to collect witness statements.
The case has drawn comparisons with another disturbing incident in Vibonati, where a nine-month-old remains in critical condition. That child, found with multiple injuries, is being treated in Naples. Police have questioned his mother and two men.
