Carlo Vettori, 43, ex-chair of Bolzano’s city council, has been placed under strict judicial restrictions. Authorities fitted him with an electronic ankle tag and issued restraining orders after allegations of domestic abuse.
Vettori, a member of Premier Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy (FdI), faces several charges. Prosecutors accuse him of aggravated mistreatment, aggravated injury, and property damage. The alleged abuse happened in front of the couple’s minor children.
Investigators say a judge ordered the measures on 22 October after prosecutors requested urgent action. Vettori must stay away from his partner and children and avoid their home.
His wife reported him to the authorities, prompting the investigation. After the complaint, Vettori resigned as chair of the city council. He also suspended himself from the Brothers of Italy party but remains a local councillor.
Vettori denied all accusations. He described the events as a “delicate and private divorce matter.” He said he had “never raised a hand against any woman.” His lawyer argued that the case involved a family dispute, not physical violence.
The investigation falls under Italy’s Codice Rosso law, which fast-tracks cases involving abuse against women or minors. Prosecutors are gathering witness statements and medical evidence.
Local politicians have urged full accountability. Green councillor Cornelia Brugger said a person accused of harming a woman should not represent Bolzano’s citizens.
