New Rome–Assisi tourist train to launch in October

News Travel & Tourism

A new tourist train linking Rome with Assisi will launch this autumn, celebrating Umbria’s olive oil harvest.

The Espresso Assisi – Frantoi Aperti service will run every Sunday from 5 October to 16 November. It forms part of Italy’s tourist train initiative, designed to connect travellers with regional traditions.

The journey departs from Rome’s Termini station at 08.30, arriving in Assisi at 11.00 and Arezzo at 12.10. The return train leaves Arezzo at 17.30, passes through Assisi after 19.02, and reaches Rome at 22.42.

Organisers describe it as “a special train flavoured with olive oil,” offering travellers the chance to immerse themselves in Umbrian food and wine culture. Passengers will sample local extra virgin olive oils during the journey, guided by experts explaining the history and character of each label.

Stops include Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, Spello, Perugia and Assisi before the final destination, Arezzo. On arrival, visitors can tour olive oil mills, observing the harvest and pressing process.

“For a whole month, art cities, mediaeval villages, towns and olive oil mills celebrate by welcoming the new oil, deeply rooted in Umbria’s heritage,” organisers said.

Full ticket details are available on the FS Treni Turistici website.
