European leaders and President Zelenskyy issue a joint statement regarding the proposed for Ukraine Peace Plan. Trump met Zelenskyy on Friday at the White House with agreement reached the ceasefire must be on present frontiers, without Ukraine ceding territory to Russia.
The fake video reshared by Donald Trump on his Truth platform set the stage for a dramatic turn in the diplomatic response to the war in Ukraine. Today, a broad coalition of European leaders – including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni – and Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a joint statement declaring their unanimous desire for a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. They stressed they “strongly support President Trump’s position that the fighting should stop immediately, and that the current line of contact should be the starting point of negotiations.”
The statement further emphasises that international borders must not change by force. It further underlines Moscow’s obstructive tactics. “Russia’s stalling tactics have shown time and time again that Ukraine is the only party serious about peace,” the leaders said, adding that they see clearly how Vladimir Putin continues to choose violence and destruction.
Leaders highlighted that Ukraine must be in the strongest possible position before, during and after any ceasefire. They announced plans to ramp up pressure on Russia’s economy and defence industry, and to deploy measures to make full use of Russia’s immobilised sovereign assets in order to give Ukraine the resources it needs.
Key figures signed the statement, including Zelenskyy, Keir Starmer of the UK, Friedrich Merz of Germany, Emmanuel Macron of France, Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Donald Tusk of Poland, Ursula von der Leyen of the EU, António Costa of the European Council, Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, Alexander Stubb of Finland and Mette Frederiksen of Denmark.
In the coming days the leaders will convene at the European Council meeting in Brussels and within the format of the Coalition of the Willing to advance these plans and further back Ukraine’s position.
Meloni consistent in favour of Ukraine upholding sovereignty
For Italy, this declaration aligns closely with Prime Minister Meloni’s consistent stance in favour of upholding sovereignty and avoiding forced territorial concessions.
The shared commitment among European allies to amplify pressure on Russia, while reaffirming Ukraine’s role in determining its own peace, marks a clear message: any ceasefire must strengthen Kyiv, not weaken it.
