Tajani plays down impact of US tariffs ruling

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday that he does not expect major consequences for Italian exports. This comes after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that sweeping tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump were unlawful.

Speaking to journalists in Forlì, Tajani, who also serves as deputy prime minister, said the decision was “always good news” in principle when tariffs are struck down. However, he cautioned against expecting significant changes in trade flows.

The Supreme Court found that the Trump administration had exceeded its statutory authority in imposing broad tariffs under emergency economic powers, arguing that the measures lacked a sufficient legal basis and bypassed Congress. The ruling effectively blocks the continuation of the contested tariff regime, although it leaves open the possibility for the administration to pursue alternative, narrower trade measures under existing trade laws.

Tajani noted that Washington had anticipated the judgment and could resort to temporary instruments or revised mechanisms to maintain pressure on trading partners. “There are temporary measures that the Americans can adopt, and they were already expecting this decision, so I don’t think there will be any major changes,” he said.

He added that he does not foresee “any significant impact on our exports”, signalling Rome’s view that Italian companies are unlikely to experience immediate disruption.

The ruling nonetheless marks an important constitutional intervention in US trade policy, reinforcing judicial limits on executive authority in the use of emergency tariff powers. It potentially reshapes the framework for future transatlantic trade disputes.
