A joint EU-US statement confirming the 15% tariffs deal reached last month in Scotland gives businesses clarity, Palazzo Chigi said Thursday.

The tariffs deal, made on July 27 between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, was formally announced on Thursday.

“The joint declaration finally provides the business world with a clear picture of the new context for transatlantic trade relations,” a government statement read.

It added that while the deal was not a final settlement, key progress had been made. “Some important milestones have already been reached, starting with avoiding a trade war and laying the foundations for mutually beneficial trade relations.”

Palazzo Chigi underlined Italy’s commitment to shielding agriculture. “The government remains committed, together with the European Commission and other EU member states, to further increase the exempt product sectors in the coming months, starting with the agri-food sector,” the statement said.

It also highlighted efforts to reach agreements on other sensitive industries. “Particular efforts will also be made to conclude an agreement on steel and aluminum, also envisaged in the joint declaration.”
