Paper ID cards to expire in Italy in 2026

Life in Italy

Paper ID cards will no longer be valid in Italy from 4 August 2026, regardless of the expiry date printed on the document. Italian authorities are urging holders of paper identity cards to apply in advance for the electronic identity card, known as the carta d’identità elettronica (CIE).

The CIE is Italy’s official identity document. For Italian citizens, it also serves as a valid travel document within all European Union countries.

Appointments to replace paper ID cards can be booked through the national ministerial online portal. Local authorities recommend booking well ahead of time to avoid delays as the deadline approaches.

What to take to a CIE appointment

Citizens attending an appointment to request the electronic identity card must bring several documents.

Applicants need their current paper identity card, even if it has expired. If the card has been lost or stolen, a police report must be presented.

A recent passport-sized photograph is required. Some municipalities take photos on site, but this varies by location.

Applicants must also bring their codice fiscale or health card. This is used to confirm personal details.

Proof of payment of the administrative fee. The cost is usually around €22, though it can vary slightly by municipality.

For minors, a parent or legal guardian must attend. Additional documentation may be required, including parental consent.

Authorities advise checking local council websites for specific requirements, as procedures can differ between municipalities. Officials continue to encourage early applications to ensure a smooth transition to electronic identity documents before August 2026.
