24-Hour Nationwide Train Strike from tonight

News Travel & Tourism

Train passengers across Italy are set to face significant disruptions as railway workers stage a 24-hour nationwide strike. The strike, organised by SGC, CUB, and USB trade unions, will commence at 21:00 on Saturday, 25 January, and conclude at the same time on Sunday, 26 January.

The industrial action will impact regional and long-distance train services operated by state rail operator Trenitalia, private rail company Italo, and Trenord in the northern Lombardia region, including the Milan area. Rail links to and from Rome’s Fiumicino airport are also likely to experience delays or cancellations, potentially causing inconvenience for air travellers.

Unlike weekday strikes, the weekend scheduling means there will be no guaranteed train services during peak hours, compounding the disruption for passengers. Trenitalia has warned that the strike could lead to cancellations and delays for Frecce, Intercity, and regional trains. Furthermore, the effects of the strike may begin earlier and extend beyond its official end time.

Unions have called the strike to demand better contracts and improved rights for employees in the railway maintenance sector. The Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) rail group, which oversees Trenitalia, has urged passengers to stay informed through various channels, including the Trenitalia app, the FS website’s Infomobility section, social media, toll-free numbers, and assistance offices at railway stations. Passengers are also encouraged to consider rescheduling their travel plans if possible.

The strike comes amid increasing scrutiny of Italy’s rail network. Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini has faced criticism over ongoing disruptions, including a series of “highly suspicious” incidents in Padua and Rome that have led to significant delays.

Travellers are advised to plan ahead and stay informed as Italy braces for a weekend of rail chaos.
