Rome to enforce 30 km/h Zones

By Region Central Italy News

Rome will impose 30 km/h zones in its historic centre and other districts to cut accidents and road deaths. The measure, announced by transport councillor Eugenio Patané, is set to become law in early September.

Around 1,000 local roads and several urban areas will fall under the 30 km/h zones, RAI reported. The first zones will cover the city centre, which records the highest accident rate in the capital.

“We have a road safety emergency,” Patané said. “Accidents have increased, and we must drastically reduce fatalities.”

New speed cameras will be installed, including at dangerous intersections to detect red-light violations. Major roads such as the Tangenziale Est, Via Isacco Newton and Via del Mare will see tighter controls.

High-speed traffic will also be banned on routes like the Cristoforo Colombo, with electronic checks monitoring compliance.

According to Corriere della Sera, Bologna’s example proves lower speed limits reduce crashes, despite initial frustration among motorists.

Rome’s council aims to replicate those results by making parts of the capital a 30 km/h city.
