A new low? Italy’s senate votes down anti-homophobic violence bill

Italy’s senate has killed off a bill that would have made violence against LGBT people and disabled people, as well as misogyny, a hate crime. Named after centre-left Democratic party (PD) legislator Alessandro Zan, the lower house approved the bill earlier in the year.

Rightwing party League tabled 700 amendments to the Zan bill or homophobia law which is now in the Senate. The fear is the bill may be delayed coming into law until after the recess due to continuing disagreements.
