Reggio Calabria politicians under investigation in mafia probe

By Region News Southern Italy

Carabinieri police on Tuesday staged a major operation linked to an investigation into alleged ties between the ‘Ndrangheta mafia and the political world of Reggio Calabria, sources said.

The police executed warrants imposing various types of restrictive measures on 14 suspects. Carabinieri police arrested seven people and put four under house arrest in a major operation linked to the investigation. Three other suspects must regularly sign in with the authorities.

Three local politicians are among the people under investigation, the sources said.

The probe is into alleged deals with the ‘Ndrangheta mafia regarding the 2020 and 2021 regional elections in Calabria. The 2020 municipal elections in Reggio Calabria allegedly also include deals.

Politicians of left and right under investigation

Reggio Calabria Mayor Giuseppe Falcomatà, a member of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), is among the people under investigation. Francesco Sera, a Reggio Calabria city councillor also with the PD, is being investigated.

The current mayor’s father, Italo Falcomatà, was also mayor of Reggio. He died prematurely of leukemia, leaving behind his son Giuseppe. He is governing a city in which the former administration was dissolved for suspected ties to the mafia. It seems some things haven’t changed.

Giuseppe Neri, the caucus head in the Calabrian regional assembly for Premier Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, is under investigation.

Prosecutors had requested the arrest of Neri and Sera, but a preliminary investigations judge refused to grant warrants for them, the sources said.
