Premier Giorgia Meloni is said to be “irritated” by the case of her party member, Emanuele Pozzolo, whose gun was shot and injured a person on New Year’s Eve. Opposition members have called for his resignation or sacking.
2024 has not got off to a good start for Meloni and one of her Brothers of Italy (FdI) party members. Emanuele Pozzolo was at a New Year’s Eve party when allegedly his gun accidentally went off. It slightly wounded the son-in-law of a member of FdI MP and Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro’s security detail.
FdI sources said on Wednesday that the incident does not have any bearing on the government.
The FdI MP who owns the gun but says he did not shoot it, Emanuele Pozzolo, is under investigation for grievous bodily harm. The bullet grazed the thigh of the 31-year-old son-in-law of Delmastro’s bodyguard.
Pozzolo took a gunshot residue test the day after the incident. The result is not yet in the public domain. According to Ansa yesterday, Pozzolo used his parliamentary immunity to refuse the confiscation of his clothing.
There have been opposition calls for Pozzolo to resign or for Meloni to fire him.
The Biella Prefecture will revoke Pozzolo’s firearm licence as a result of the incident.
Pozzolo has in the past posted on social media photos of Mussolini, and said he is a “reactionary” who is in favour of “defending ourselves with firearms”.
