Italy to host AI conference during G7 Presidency

Business News

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Italy will host a significant AI conference during its presidency of the G7 next year. She made this announcement while addressing the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park, UK, on Thursday.

Italy’s PM Giorgia Meloni said a conference on AI will be part of Italy’s G7 presidency next year. She was attending an AI summit at Bletchley Park in England, home of the WWII code breakers.

“We aim to invite scholars, leaders, and experts from around the world to participate, facilitating discussions on methods, initiatives, and guidelines to ensure that AI serves as a complement to the workforce rather than a replacement, enhancing working conditions and prospects,” Prime Minister Meloni stated.

As she discussed the unregulated development of artificial intelligence, she highlighted the potential consequences of a shrinking job market, which could have severe implications for fair wealth distribution.

Meloni emphasised that applications of artificial intelligence offer extensive opportunities across various domains but are accompanied by substantial risks. These risks encompass opaque decision-making processes, discrimination, infringements on privacy, and criminal activities, as large language models (LLMs) may be employed to create weapons, instigate low-tech biological harm, execute cyber attacks, and facilitate personalised phishing attempts.

“The development of artificial intelligence represents the most significant intellectual, practical, and anthropological challenge of our era,” Prime Minister Meloni concluded.

Italy originally banned ChatGPT, allowing it to be available only on April 30th this year.

Turin AI centre

In October, it was announced a national artificial intelligence centre will be operational immediately in Turin. The Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, who concluded the inauguration ceremony of the academic year of the Polytechnic, made the announcement.

“We have finally defined the statute that will allow the Centre to be activated immediately and will give impetus to Turin’s activity and its ability to guide the transformation process which should not frighten us”, said Urso. Urso also stated the Centre will have funding of €20 million per year.

“One of the G7 meetings, which I hope can be held here in Turin and which my ministry will have to organise, is dedicated to artificial intelligence, the digital economy and space”, added Urso.
