At a meeting in Florence today, Prime Minister Mario Draghi told businesspeople Italy will end the state of emergency on 31st March 2022. He promised a gradual return to normality.

Whilst meeting businesspeople in Florence on Wednesday, Draghi said the government is to end the state of emergency at the end of March.

State of emergency will not be extended

Following two years of crisis brought on by the pandemic, the government has been under increasing pressure from businesses to roll back restrictions.

The state of emergency allows officials to bypass bureaucracy and impose rules via decrees.

“We will continue to closely monitor the pandemic situation, ready to intervene in case of an outbreak. But our goal is to reopen fully, as soon as possible,” Draghi said.

Green Pass will also be phased out  

The government will also gradually end the obligation to have a Super Green Pass health certificate, he added.

The so-called Super Green Pass which shows proof of vaccination or recent recovery from COVID. It is needed to access many places, including the workplace. It will be progressively phased out, starting with outdoor activities, Draghi said. He added quarantines and FFP2 face masks in schools would be halted in April.

In other remarks, the prime minister said the price of energy was concerning and that Italy would boost gas production.
