Meloni highlighted additional features, such as a “crackdown on scams against the elderly” with increased prison sentences from two to six years for aggravated fraud. The premier underscored measures targeting specific issues, including combating pickpockets, penalising individuals using minors for begging, introducing a new crime for participating in or organising prison riots, and addressing protestors causing traffic disruptions.

Before the cabinet meeting, Meloni explained that the bill aims to modernise the armed forces’ structure, recognising the necessity to adapt to increased national and international commitments. She emphasised that the legislation would enhance professionalism, protect new domains, and recruit specialised permanent service professionals.

Enhancing the roles of security, defence and public rescue

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi praised the bill on defence, security, and public rescue, stating it “significantly improves the quality of work for those engaged in protecting citizens’ security daily.” Piantedosi emphasised the government’s commitment to regulations and concrete measures aimed at enhancing the roles within the security, defence, and public rescue sectors.

Meloni assured unions representing the police and armed services that the 1.5 billion euros allocated in the 2024 budget bill for renewing the collective contract in the defence and security sector would result in a 5.8% pay rise, providing financial support for those dedicated to ensuring the nation’s safety.
