Naples metro accident – One worker dead, two injured

By Region News Southern Italy

One worker is dead, and two others are seriously injured, after an accident during excavations for a new Naples metro line on Wednesday.

The latest in a series of fatal workplace accidents in Italy, excavations for the Naples metro led to an accident in which one man lost his life. Two others are in critical condition in hospital.

The victim has been identified as 63-year-old Antonio Russo from Giugliano in Campania, who was set to retire in September.

A 54-year-old worker suffered a concussion and is currently unconscious. He is in critical condition at Ospedale del Mare Hospital. The other injured worker, a 59-year-old, is in shock and has severe leg bruising. He is also in critical condition at Cardarelli Hospital.

The accident occurred when the earth gave way during construction on the line between Capodichino, the site of the city airport, and Poggioreale, where one of its prisons is located.

This incident is part of a troubling pattern of fatal workplace accidents in Italy, which has sparked union protests. Earlier this month, five men died after inhaling toxic gas in a sewer network near Palermo, and seven others perished in a hydro power plant explosion near Bologna last month.
